Si l\u2019on avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 rep\u00e9r\u00e9 des mines de nodules dans le Pacifique, on ignorait encore si le ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne \u00e9tait \u00e0 ce point courant que les fonds oc\u00e9aniques de la plan\u00e8te enti\u00e8re en seraient tapiss\u00e9s. Thomas Walter)\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tout s\u2019est pass\u00e9 par accident car \u00e0 l\u2019origine, le vaisseau de recherche avait pour objectif l\u2019\u00e9tude de la vie marine dans les grands fonds. Mais au lieu d\u2019esp\u00e8ces marines, leur \u00ab\u00a0traineau \u00e9pibenthique\u00a0\u00bb (syst\u00e8me robotis\u00e9 qui drague le fond et prend des photos) a remont\u00e9 des nodules.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.science-et-vie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Thomas-Walter2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12845\" src=\"http:\/\/www.science-et-vie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Thomas-Walter2-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Le traineau \u00e9pibenthique qui a remont\u00e9 les nodules (Ph. Thomas Walter)\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>La d\u00e9couverte est d\u2019autant plus int\u00e9ressante que depuis les ann\u00e9es 1970, ces formations aiguisent l\u2019app\u00e9tit de l\u2019industrie, surtout derni\u00e8rement avec la <a title=\"Lire l'\u00e9tat des lieux sur l'exploitation des fonds oc\u00e9aniques sur le site de la BBC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-28442640\" target=\"_blank\">p\u00e9nurie et le rench\u00e9rissement des mati\u00e8res premi\u00e8res<\/a>. Et d\u00e9j\u00e0 1,2 millions de km carr\u00e9s de fonds marins ont re\u00e7u un permis de prospection (mais non pas d\u2019exploitation) par des firmes mini\u00e8res de nombreux pays dont les \u00c9tats-Unis, la Grande Bretagne, l\u2019Inde, le Br\u00e9sil, la Russie. N\u00e9anmoins, l\u2019organisme qui r\u00e9gule la distribution de ces permis, l\u2019<a title=\"Lire dans le site de l'ISA\" href=\"http:\/\/www.isa.org.jm\/fr\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Autorit\u00e9 internationale des fonds marins<\/em><\/a> (ISA), le fait avec parcimonie \u00e0 cause des risques de pollution globale et de destruction locale des \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes englobant ces formations \u2013 les ressources des fonds marins situ\u00e9s hors eaux territoriales sont class\u00e9s \u00ab\u00a0patrimoine commun de l\u2019humanit\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb par l\u2019ONU.<\/p>\n<h3>UNE MINE D\u2019INFORMATIONS SUR LE CLIMAT ET LES \u00c9V\u00c8NEMENTS OC\u00c9ANIQUES DEPUIS PLUS DE 10 MILLIONS D\u2019ANN\u00c9ES<\/h3>\n<p>De leur cot\u00e9, les scientifiques, qui pr\u00e9cisent que le voisinage des nodules ne semble pas abriter un \u00e9cosyst\u00e8me tr\u00e8s riche (peut-\u00eatre \u00e0 cause de la pr\u00e9sence des m\u00e9taux), insistent sur l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat de pr\u00e9server et \u00e9tudier ces formations dont les stries \u00e0 croissance tr\u00e8s lente servent d\u2019archives climatiques, \u00e0 l\u2019instar des carottes de glace extraites des p\u00f4les. Aussi, pour l\u2019heure, l\u2019exploitation mini\u00e8re des fonds oc\u00e9aniques est encore sujet \u00e0 d\u00e9bat.
